Kavieng, Papua New Guinea, 24th March
Live & Learn with Provincial Government leaders, Kavieng Urban Local Government staff, Schools and community members, signed an MoU to form the Kavieng Urban WASH Committee. This is a part of Live & Learn’s Pacific WASH program, designed to improve access to non-subsidised improved sanitation for people of all ages, genders and special needs through the establishment of local enterprise groups.
Participants at the inception workshop included the Mayor, Hon: Stanley Manisini MPA and Departmental Heads with Civil Society groups as well as interested community members. The Government Departments in attendance included:
- Education Division- New Ireland
- Provincial Climate Change
- Provincial Disaster & Emergency Office
- Kavieng Urban Local Level Government
- Kulangit Community
- Maiom Primary School
The program included presentations by Live & Learn’s PNG team, Mr Patrick Topital, Ben Ngava and Mr Christopher Gai on sanitation statistics in PNG, the sanitation challenges faced by schools and the aims of the Sanitation Marketing project.
Live & Learn would like to thank the Mayor Hon: Stanley Mansini MPA for supporting for program. He said, “A partnership approach is critical”. The Mayor has pledged support, both political and financial to ensure successful implementation of the program. The deputy Governor during his closing remarks thanked Live & Learn for the initiative and has also requested Live & Learn extend the project to Tikana Local Level Government area. He has pledged support for the project, especially to achieve the Provincial Aim of becoming an open defecation free province.
