Today, May 28th 2015 marks the second annual Menstrual Hygiene Day. This day is aimed at raising awareness of the difficulties that many women and girls face during and as a result of their period, and recognising the positive solutions to addressing these issues.
Live & Learn’s Papua New Guinea WASH Team celebrated Menstrual Hygiene Day 2015 with an event at Maoim Primary School, Kavieng. The day included inputs from numerous stakeholders, including Live & Learn staff, teaching staff, students and key members of the community. Highlights included:
- A traditional welcome from local chiefs and ward counsellor;
- Senior boys and girls performed a play about the impact that stigma and teasing around menstruation has on girls at school;
- Panamax and Colgate Palmolive conducted hand washing demonstrations, displayed menstrual hygiene products and spoke about the importance of good hygiene for boys and girls;
- Signing of an Memorandum of Understanding between The Mayor, Live & Learn PNG and New Ireland Savings and Loans Society.
