IWC supports capacity building for sanitation marketing in the Pacific

image_miniIWC has facilitated a series of program orientation and capacity development workshops with local partner organisation, Live & Learn, across four Pacific Island countries as part of the Western Pacific Sanitation Marketing and Innovation Program (WPSMIP).

This program is implemented by Live & Learn in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji, in partnership with IWC and International Women’s Development Agency (IWDA), and supported by the Australian Government’s Civil Society WASH Fund.

It aims to increase access to improved sanitation by empowering communities to sustain local sanitation enterprises, and strengthening sanitation markets to deliver sustainable services in informal and peri-urban areas. Particular attention will be paid to the needs of women and girls and people living with a disability, to ensure equitable access to secure and hygienic toilet facilities for health, safety and wellbeing.

During the recent capacity development workshops, IWC supported Live & Learn WASH staff to develop program theories of change, a framework for sanitation marketing, and research tools for market analysis, monitoring and evaluation. Building on these activities, the Live & Learn team in Papua New Guinea recently held an inception workshop with local stakeholders to introduce the WPSMIP and sanitation marketing concepts to local stakeholders.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Live & Learn PNG, provincial and local governments, school officials and community representatives, forming the Kavieng Urban WASH Committee. It is hoped that this Committee will strengthen the enabling environment for sanitation marketing in New Ireland Province and provide a model for public-private partnerships in support of sanitation marketing throughout the country.

IWC will continue to provide capacity development support to Live & Learn, with a focus on monitoring and evaluation, knowledge and learning, and action research, to build an evidence-base for sanitation marketing in Pacific Island Countries.

IWC is also leading two Australian Development Research Award Scheme (ADRAS) projects in the region, on Understanding Demand and Fostering Sustainable WASH Marketplaces, and Pacific Adaptation for Climate Change in WASH, with opportunities for learning across these projects and the WPSMIP.
