In the Solomon Islands the Henderson Community WASH Committee conducted a public hand-washing demonstration at the local market to bring attention to Global Hand-washing Day. The demonstration was held on Friday 14 October, just in time to promote public awareness of Global Hand-washing Day on 15 October.
Live & Learn worked with the WASH Committee members to construct a hand-washing station using tippy taps and bright blue soap hanging on ropes! People of all ages washed their hands during the event – children, mothers, youth and adults.
Henderson is one of the pilot communities that Live & Learn is working with in the Sanitation Marketing component of the Western Pacific Sanitation Marketing & Innovation Program, which is funded by the Australian government through the Civil Society WASH Fund. The team observed a nice little piece of Australian promotion when a member of the public decided to try out the tippy tap station while wearing an Australian flag on their hat!
The Henderson WASH Committee provides oversight and support to the Henderson Community-based Sanitation Enterprise, which is being established to provide access to affordable toilets and safe sanitation for households living in the peri-urban Henderson Community on the outskirts of Honiara in Solomon Islands.
