The Fiji Community-based Sanitation Market (CBSM) is an enterprise established to sell toilets and improved sanitation products in informal peri-urban settlements in Suva.
The Ministry of Health in Fiji have ordered 150 toilet slabs and riser seats from the CBSM, which will be used to complete toilets that the Ministry of Health is constructing in Ra Medical Sub Division, Bua Medical Sub Division and Taveuni Medical Sub Division.
Construction has commenced and the enterprise plans to produce 5 slabs and risers each day to fulfil the order. Pictured below is the enterprise Construction Officer, Mr Malimali, beside the mould that will be used to construct the seat risers. Also pictured is the enterprise Team Leader, Mr Lemeki, preparing the base for the concrete slabs.
The purpose of these water seal toilets is to lower the ratio of toilet sharing commonly practiced in rural communities, avoid open defecation, minimise the risk of communicable diseases and ensure safety, privacy and security for households when using the toilet.
The CBSM enterprise was established with the assistance of Live & Learn Environmental Education, with support from the Australian government through the Civil Society WASH Fund.
