On Friday 8 September the Kavieng Main Market was buzzing with activity as people gathered for the Launch of TopWan brand of sanitation products in New Ireland.
The event was organised by Live and Learn staff and they were assisted by prisoners and guards from the Kavieng minimum security jail. The launch was supported by the three local schools participating WASH in Schools program, Maiom, Kaselok and Webster Primary Schools, and Nehemiah Christian Academy. Students from the schools prepared dramas and role plays to share hygiene and sanitation messages, which promoted sales of the TopWan products displayed during the launch.
The Town Deputy Mayor, around 20 prisoners and 10 prison guards, as well as Ward Councillor for Ward 2 Kavieng Urban Local Level Government and Ward Councillor for Ward 4 Kaselok Tikana Local Level Government were present.
The launch program included info about TopWan sanitation products, improved toilets, songs and drama performances. Certificates were also presented for people who have completed soap making and construction training.
Public participation was outstanding, making this the largest event for the Live and Learn Kavieng team so far. Feedback was very positive, people were impressed with the event and with the TopWan brand, and several orders were placed for products. As a further incentive, all customers who purchased toilet slabs and seat raisers at the launch were also given a free bucket to use for hand washing.
Building on this success, the team is planning to roll out the TopWan franchise. They will start with current partner communities and then expand along the eastern seaboard of New Ireland. The aim is to get roadside markets and village shops involved in the sale and promotion of TopWan sanitation hygiene products and services.
